Modern Family the season finale starts out with a focus on Phil and Claire. They’re having a minor argument because Phil is about to go off to a sporting event and she is reminding him that they have the big family portrait today which she has spent so much time coordinating everybody’s schedules to plan.

The photographer only has 1 hour in which he can see them so they must be there and Claire wants the picture to be perfect. Like many mothers she feels time slipping away and wants to freeze this moment in time for posterity.

Phil says everything will be fine and is off on his way. He goes over to Jay’s house to get Jay and Manny. He brings Alex along because unfortunately Luke has just remembered that he was supposed to interview someone from the 1960s.

Then Jay has an aha moment. A look of disgust comes over his face.

We all know the sting that certain family obligations can place upon us. And how those obligations can cause us to miss events and things in our lives that we so want to see.

Jay has just remembered that he promised Luke he would allow Luke to interview him. Today is that day so in addition to Luke, Jay will not be attending the Lakers game.

This means the group of four will be Gloria and Manny along with Phil and Alex.

Back at their house where the family portrait is suspected to go down Claire notices that one of the steps on the stairs is broken. She reasons that if Phil can fix this kind of thing it can’t be too difficult and so attempts it herself. It is quite hilarious as she only makes things worse. The comedy of errors continues as she smashes and breaks a lot of stuff in her attempt to fix it.

Haley is little comfort to her perfectionist mom.

There are two hilarious things which happen at the game and Claire is freaking out. Haley has the TV tuned into the game when she sees her dad. She points this out to her mom who calls Phil. He screens her call so it goes to voicemail which angers Claire to no end. Later on in the game the ‘kiss cam’ is focused on Phil and Gloria.

At first they resist but it comes back on them twice more and so Gloria kisses Phil.

Alex gets a text from Healy that their mom is super pissed. Phil thinks it’s because she saw the kiss even though kiss cams are only supposed to be for people at the stadium and not shown on TV.

Very soon after a text comes in from her grandpa and Alex tells Phil “grandpa wants to fight you”.

Phil thinks it’s all about the kiss with Gloria. But he missed the fact that when Luke was talking to grandpa, Jay said that Sinatra was the best singer and he would fight anybody who thought otherwise. This is the moment Luke tells him that Phil thinks some other singer is the best ever.

Cameron has gotten a gig as a wedding singer. Since Mitchell hates small talk he decides to let Cameron go alone. This has Cameron upset and leaves Mitchell in an awkward situation at home.

Somehow a pigeon has found its way into the house and Mitchell is making this very gay squealing noise as he is terrified of this little pigeon. Much hilarity ensues and you can probably guess that Mitchell ends up destroying their house.

Toward the end of the season finale all of these things are coming together in the family portrait. They’re running out of daylight and Claire is clearly freaking out.

Cameron is doubly angry with Mitchell for destroying their house and a seemingly inordinately high amount of the things that Cameron’s mom had given them were Mitchell’s targets to be destroyed. Mitchell says it is merely coincidence. Cameron is also more angry that Mitchell would not put aside his own fears and come to the wedding with him.

The truth comes out about the Phil and Gloria kiss which has everyone on edge.

The sprinklers go off, there is a cool mud fight, and at the end of the day there is much satisfaction with how things have turned out.

A rousing, quite hilarious end to the first season of this wonderful new show.

Modern Family the Hawaii episode starts out with the hilarious drag queens at it again. Jay’s son Mitchell is freaking out because his partner Cameron is taken video footage of him exiting the van shuttle from the airport with Lily.

It doesn’t go as planned because Lily is holding a stuffed bear which blocks the shot of her face. He says he wants to do it again but Jay says no way we’re doing it a third time.

There were many more storylines to play out in this show. They get checked into the hotel where Manny and Luke will be roommates. This is a match made in hell.

Manny is a total neat freak and old soul.

Luke is just a little boy who wants to have fun and make a huge mess. It takes only moments before their styles to begin to clash.

Phil is determined to give his wife Claire the honeymoon they never had. They reveal in their little side interviews that the show does how they were scheduled to have a honeymoon in Hawaii which was canceled because Phil knocked Claire up with Hayley. They never got around to taking the honeymoon. More than that they never even had a real wedding.

All they did was go down to the courthouse on Tuesday and get hitched.

At the start they’re lounging by the pool when Gloria exits. Phil is staring hard into Claire’s eyes even though she’s wearing sunglasses. She asks him whether he’s just looking into the reflection of Gloria walking out of the pool. He asks her if she’s going in slow motion or if it’s just him.

Jay gets this call from his brother and they do their typical talking trash back and forth.

Then his brother hits the mother lode. He says, “Jay you’re 63 right? That’s the same age dad was when he died.”

This hits Jay very hard because he realizes just how true it is. The brother backpedals a little because he knows what a number this has done on Jay. He tells Jay all the reasons their dad died was because of heavy drinking, terrible diet, with little or no exercise. These are all the things that Jay has been doing for a while and had planned to continue on this Hawaii vacation.

This really hammers him.

So he swings the pendulum in the completely opposite direction and starts a maniacal exercise and diet plan.

This is putting Gloria out because he’s taking her along for this crazy exercise and she is sore all over. This is not what she bargained for because one of the advantages of marrying an older man is that she would never have to be keeping up with him.

Claire and Phil are attempting to do their own thing in the pool when Hayley wants to go across the street with some friends she’s just met. Claire is against it but Phil convinces her to let it happen. Hailey gets drunk and has a nasty hangover in her room with much vomitting.

Manny and Luke reach a boiling point when Manny kicks him out. He storms off saying he’ll just go room with his sisters.

Meanwhile there’s one huge funny topper to finish the episode. Through all this strenuous exercise overnight Jay’s body was not prepared for it. He’s thrown out his back and is stuck in a hammock. This is distressing because he is missing his own birthday dinner which the entire family has planned for him. It’s the guest of honor not showing up for his own party.

So they all go searching for him. This isn’t the only thing that was lost in this episode. Earlier in the day Cameron and Mitchell were freaking out because they lost Lily. I’ll let you watch that because it’s equally funny.

Phil is the one who happens upon Jay. He attempts to help him up despite Jay’s protests and pleas for Phil to go get some help from the hotel.

Phil assures Jay that he can handle it without a problem. Phil ends up hurting himself and having a very embarrassing moment as other people walk by. You have to see it to believe it.

Birmingham International Airport

Another funny episode from an incredibly well-written show. The ensemble cast is also what makes this show so fantastic.

This episode centers around Jay’s coming birthday. His wife Sophia has planned this huge birthday blowout and spared no expense. Jay’s not too happy about this because it’s not her money she’s spending but his money. She invites the entire family to go to Maui with them for the week.

Jay was all excited because he was with his wife thinking they were going alone.

They had Manny staying over with Phil and Claire.

But it was all a ruse by Sophia because the whole family meets them at the airport. She says that she bought all their tickets and planned the whole trip. There is a ton of activities including hiking, singing, and checking out the volcano.

Jay was wanting some alone time with his wife and to read.

He now realizes he’s probably not going to get even a moment alone. This drives him to the bar where he starts drinking. One complication arises when Phil and Mitchell arrive at the airport at roughly the same time.

Mitchell forgot his wallet which has his ID and everything in it. They don’t believe they have enough time but Phil says they’ve got plenty of time and offers to drive him back. So their adventure and race against time begins.

Meanwhile Claire is freaking out because Phil said that he would be there with her at the airport. She has developed an insane fear of flying. Since Phil is not there she is feeling abandoned. This drives her to the bar where she starts drinking with her dad.

They show a few flashbacks and one includes Dylan sleeping on the floor of Haley’s room. He couldn’t bear to part with her since she’s going to be gone for a full week. She has to rush him out of the house so her parents don’t think that anything happened between them last night.

He ends up getting stuck in the house after they turn on the alarm.

Little Manny is apparently on a no-fly list. There is quite a hilarious exchange between him and his mom and the airport security guy.

It all gets straightened out in the end as they’re boarding the plane. But not before Jay finds out that his family is only staying for six days and he and Sophia will have their alone time after that.

It ends with the boarding pass guy asking Claire whether she’s been drinking. She seems to be almost passed out so Phil says they’re just joking around. “Let’s play bride of Frankenstein honey.” Phil says.

He then carries her onto the plane and she seems to be unconscious.

The episode with Phil’s dad’s dog. Phill’s dad comes in for a surprise visit at least it’s a surprise to Claire.

Phil knew about his dad’s coming trip but he hadn’t mentioned it to Claire because he was waiting for the right time. It wasn’t supposed to be for three or four more days but his dad came in early. And there’s also a dog involved.

Phil wanted to wait for the right time and one of those right times came but he cashed it in for sex instead.

The dad is quite hilarious and he and Phil are basically the same guy.

Jay and Manny are at the dentist office when Jay runs into someone he knew. This guy says hi Jay  out of the blue and asks if he remembers him. Jay is at a loss until the guy says that he was his gay sons friend in the high school acting class.

He tells Jay he’s just been in a new movie so Jay’s interest is piqued.

When Manny comes out of the dentist office and gives the all clear about his teeth and no cavities Jay invites him to go to a movie. Even though Manny protests that he has school today Jay busts him out.

Jay is remembering a time from his own youth when his dad busted him out and took him to the race track.

He had a ton of fun that day.

Then he says maybe it will even score some points with his mom Sophia. But then he starts to wonder whether his dad did that just to score points with his mom and gets a little bit grossed out.

The dog is starting to attach itself to Claire. She starts to care about it more than she imagined she would.

A calamity strikes Haley’s boyfriend Dillon. His drummer’s parents are getting back together so he’s moving to Portland. But Cameron the gay boyfriend says he can drum so they invite him into the band.

The gig is going quite well but Cameron ends up doing this drummer solo just way too long.

The drummer’s parents split up again so he is back in the band and Cameron is out. Finally, as the episode ends Phil gets closer to his dad when he finds out his dad is having some difficulties in the marriage. He loves his dog but his wife is allergic so it’s causing problems.

Phil suggests his mom get allergy shots so the dad can keep his dog and they can all live happily ever after.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - FEBRUARY 26: Actor Ed O'N...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

I’ve gotten into the new show Modern Family because it is a very funny show. I was a big fan of Married With Children and it’s got the actor who played Al Bundy. His name is Ed O’Neill.

It’s also got the hot mom Claire and the up-and-coming hottie Haley who is their teenage daughter. The husband and father Phil is the funny court jester type of character. He’s got his sidekick which is his son Luke who is about 10 years old and seems to be pretty dumb. Their middle child Alex is fairly smart and nerdy girl.

If you’ve gotten into watching the show I won’t go into too much of the background but basically this show is about the overbearing father-in-law who is played by Ed O’Neill. He has a 10-year-old stepson from his hot trophy wife who is much younger than him and they are both from Columbia.

So the stepson Manny and the grandson Luke are both on this basketball team together. And their basketball team absolutely stinks, they are quite terrible.

The coach of their team is incredibly abusive and neither Phil nor Jay (character played by Ed O’Neill) likes the coach. The moms are of course livid and demanding that their husbands do something about this coach.

Hilarity ensues when they go to talk to the coach and he unexpectedly just up and quits because he says he doesn’t have to take this kind of abuse. And he urges them to do better in a sarcastic tone as he storms off.

Another power struggle ensues between the overbearing father-in-law Jay and the younger dad Phil who means well but is pretty goofy. Jay claims that his experience coaching football qualifies him to be the coach of this basketball team and basically edges Phil out.

The team is getting their butts kicked and they’ve only scored 4 points when Jay gets so frustrated he gives up and goes to Phil. Of course, Phil doesn’t just let him off the hook and makes him do a series of apologies which really gets under Jay’s skin but he does it.

Phil does end up coaching this bad news Bears of a basketball team and doesn’t fare much better.

The sideplot in this show involved the mommies and how their kids are getting older and don’t want them around because they are being embarrassed. Definitely a funny episode worth watching.
