Merlin is a show that I’ve recently gotten into which highlights the early part of the adventure that Merlin and King Arthur shared.

On tonight’s episode the lady Morgana who is currently the ward and trusted and beloved child of Arthur’s father King Uther has set out on a journey. She is going to visit her father’s grave.

Of course, they set out on a path which is basically a little road surrounded by woods on all sides and you can just get the sense that the inevitable ambush is coming. This is due to Morgana being someone Uther highly values and so capturing her would obviously be of great value to whoever held her.

King Uther is quite fond of her and also quite wealthy so would definitely pay to get her back.

The bad guys know this and their ambush works. There are many losses on both sides but they capture both the lady Morgana and her servant Guenevere.

Their capture is short-lived though through a clever ruse lady Morgana concocts when she says that she wants to bathe. She has hatched a scheme with Guenevere where they will escape. When the time comes Morgana makes her escape but Guenevere twists her ankle and she is left behind.

The mercenary captors take Guenevere and masquerade her as the lady Morgana to their master. Their master of course wants to ransom the lady Morgana back to King Uther for a large sum of money.

The lady Morgana makes her way back to Camelot and tells this tale to King Uther. She demands and then begs that he send a rescue party but he says that it’s a heavily fortified castle. “How many men should I risk to save your maid?” he asks.

This leaves the lady Morgana distraught but King Uther’s son Arthur is quite in love with Guenevere and is set on mounting a rescue. He takes his trusty servant Merlin and they’re off onto the trail.

Lancelot enters as a sword fighter into the mercenaries lair not knowing that Guinevere is there. They had met earlier and a spark of love blossomed between the two of them. Destiny has now brought them back together.

We are anxious to see what happens and they’re these giant rat like creatures that make an appearance and make things interesting. This episode had cage fighting, the giant rats, and of course adventures on horseback with a daring rescue. Arthur and Merlin even scaled the castle wall.

All in all an episode you should take a look at if you like fantasy and magic because it is quite captivating.

Baby on Board Movie

24 April 2010
Heather Graham in June 2007
Image via Wikipedia

Baby on Board is a movie that I had never heard of beforeĀ  but was perusing the satellite last night and happened to come upon it. It apparently came out in 2008 and stars Jerry O’Connell of “Sliders” fame as well as Heather Graham the hottie from numerous movies.

They are up-and-coming young professionals who have an outstanding marriage. Jerry is friends with the guy from “Sex and the City” and he is also an extremely successful lawyer but his marriage is on the rocks.

He is cheating on his wife and they are on the way to divorce. They treat each other absolutely terribly and when they do speak it is very acrimonious. This leads me to believe this movie is going to be about self-discovery and the perils of marriage.

Our hero Jerry is something of a sleazy lawyer with no morals who deals in divorce law.

He’s representing a woman who is in her 40s and looks pretty good who has married a 97-year-old man. She only married him because he said he was going to be dying soon and she was going to be getting all of his money.

These are the kind of cases our antihero takes.

His wife happens upon him making out with the client and then fails to see that she was the one who lunged at him and he is pushing her away. This of course starts the conflict.

It’s not exactly “The War of the Roses” with Danny DeVito, Michael Douglas, and Kathleen Turner. It doesn’t escalate to that violent and absolutely insidious place that Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner took it to in that movie.

They mainly go with the silent treatment and disdain for one another’s presence.

They both go out on dates in a vainglorious attempt to make each other jealous. It does end up working but in the process they also find out how much they love each other.

Jerry’s friend throughout the movie tries his hardest to be with other women and to get past his marriage. But he simply cannot because even when he looks at other women he sees his wife Sylvie’s face.

At the end he gives a very stirring speech that gives Jerry’s character the courage to go back to his wife and be the father that he was always supposed to be.

Both the main characters discover that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

It’s a typical hokey Hollywood ending.

The movie did have some funny points and laughs so give it 2 out of 5 stars.

Hugo "Hurley" Reyes
Image via Wikipedia

Hugo takes center stage.

We explore deeper into what Hugo’s life was like after the nuclear bomb was set off. We see the changes and how he would have interacted if his life had not been altered by the crash.

Obviously, the Libby character, who was his love interest from season two or season three, comes back. Only this time she is the one in the mental hospital and claiming that she knows him from a past life. It got a little bit sappy but when she first kisses Hugo he starts seeing flashes of their time together on the island but does not know what to do with these images nor what to make of them.

Hugo was doing his normal rich guy thing with lots of his chicken restaurant’s and also lots of philanthropy. But his mom was getting upset because even though “everybody loves Hugo” she says “women do not love Hugo”.

So she sets him up on this blind date with Rosalita who is a neighbor and ends up not showing up for it. This is when the crazy Libby approaches Hugo at the restaurant with her wild story.

Meanwhile back on the island survivors are actually starting to listen to Hugo and put great weight in his decision-making. His influence on them is gaining but he also is starting to feel the weight of that responsibility.

The John Locke devil wants to know what Charles Whidmore was hiding and sends Sayid to find out. Sayid discovers Desmond and brings him back to John Locke.

Of course you’re led to wonder exactly what is going to happen and even though the black smoke doesn’t know why Desmond is there he does know that since Whitmore wants him there he should eliminate him. So he takes him out on a walk just the two of them and ends up throwing him down a well.

We aren’t shown what happens to Desmond we can only conclude that he is dead.

There was a cool dynamite scene where the protector of the “candidates” gets taken out because of the unstable dynamite. The Michael character from the early seasons of Lost appears a few times in this episode to warn Hugo of the danger of destroying the plane.

So Hurley takes this to mean that the plane needs to stay intact and they need a different plan. They’re on their way to get more dynamite from the old ship when Hurley ends up blowing the ship up.

Some of the group here follows Richard Alpert. Jack, Sun, and the pilot end up following Hugo. Richard is convinced they have to blow up the plane still. Hugo has decided that Michael is right and should be listened to so he decides they need to go talk to the black smoke John Locke guy.

They arrive in the John Locke camp and then everything goes dark so hopefully next week we will find out what happens as we march ever closer to the finale of Lost.

LOS ANGELES, CA - JANUARY 25: Actress Tina Fe...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

“Date Night” was a movie that I have not heard much about. I guess it had gotten lost in all of the big-time releases in April of 2010 with Clash of the Titans and Hot Tub Time Machine already being released this month.

But I first saw a commercial with the main characters being Steve Correll and Tina Fey and I knew this had possibility to be an extremely funny movie. I also saw Mark Wahlberg and that hottie from the most recent Fast and Furious movie that came out in 2009 was also in it so I knew it was golden.

With this cast of characters I knew it was something I had to see. And when I saw it I was not disappointed.

Steve and Tina play this married couple who have been married for over 10 years and have like three kids. They live a boring New Jersey life.

In an attempt to spice things up they have a Date Night every week but it ends up being the exact same dinner at this crab leg place.

So Steve decides he wants to spice things up and get out of the rut that they find themselves in. And of course this is the early part of the story where you expect that some conflict is going to enter in to spice things up. And Date Night Movie does not disappoint in this regard.

Steve says he’s going to take his wife to this new restaurant called “Claw” which is a high-class seafood restaurant that is exceedingly difficult to get into. But he assures Tina that they’re going to get there early enough on Friday night that there will be an open table.

Of course, when they get there the folly of this idea becomes apparent. First off they got stuck in traffic and it takes way longer to get there than Steve had anticipated. Next the gay hostess looks at them like they are crazy to come in at 7:30 PM on a Friday night expecting to get an open table without a reservation.

So they go wait at the bar in a futile attempt to get a table. And that’s when it happens.

A sexy girl who works there is walking by shouting “Tripplehorn”. She keeps saying it “Tripplehorn”. So Steve sees his opportunity to seize this reservation that isn’t theirs because clearly the Tripplehorn’s aren’t claiming it.

They sit down and gasp at the crazy high prices. And then these two really evil looking dudes stroll up to their table and tell them that they have to go outside. Of course, they are thinking only that they are in trouble for taking someone else’s reservation.

But they would soon find themselves in way deeper than they ever anticipated because these guys are demanding a flash drive that was stolen from their mean mobster type boss. Steve and Tina tell them they know nothing about it and that they simply stole this reservation but the two evil deeds are unconvinced.

The story goes off on a huge tangent as they finally realize they must hunt down the Tripplehorns and get the flash drive otherwise the evil mob boss is never going to let them alone. And they are extremely worried about their children.

A crazy adventure then begins and a lot of self-discovery happens. They reaffirm how much they love each other and that they would do their marriage all over again.

And Tina for the first time sees her husband as he really is. He was a leader who put this whole plan together and ended up taking down the district attorney and the head mob boss because of his shrewd strategy.

This was quite funny and I give it 4 stars out of 5. Here’s a little spoiler: there’s a crazy pole dance between Steve and Tina that’ll knock you off your chair and have you rolling on the floor laughing.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - FEBRUARY 26: Actor Ed O'N...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

I’ve gotten into the new show Modern Family because it is a very funny show. I was a big fan of Married With Children and it’s got the actor who played Al Bundy. His name is Ed O’Neill.

It’s also got the hot mom Claire and the up-and-coming hottie Haley who is their teenage daughter. The husband and father Phil is the funny court jester type of character. He’s got his sidekick which is his son Luke who is about 10 years old and seems to be pretty dumb. Their middle child Alex is fairly smart and nerdy girl.

If you’ve gotten into watching the show I won’t go into too much of the background but basically this show is about the overbearing father-in-law who is played by Ed O’Neill. He has a 10-year-old stepson from his hot trophy wife who is much younger than him and they are both from Columbia.

So the stepson Manny and the grandson Luke are both on this basketball team together. And their basketball team absolutely stinks, they are quite terrible.

The coach of their team is incredibly abusive and neither Phil nor Jay (character played by Ed O’Neill) likes the coach. The moms are of course livid and demanding that their husbands do something about this coach.

Hilarity ensues when they go to talk to the coach and he unexpectedly just up and quits because he says he doesn’t have to take this kind of abuse. And he urges them to do better in a sarcastic tone as he storms off.

Another power struggle ensues between the overbearing father-in-law Jay and the younger dad Phil who means well but is pretty goofy. Jay claims that his experience coaching football qualifies him to be the coach of this basketball team and basically edges Phil out.

The team is getting their butts kicked and they’ve only scored 4 points when Jay gets so frustrated he gives up and goes to Phil. Of course, Phil doesn’t just let him off the hook and makes him do a series of apologies which really gets under Jay’s skin but he does it.

Phil does end up coaching this bad news Bears of a basketball team and doesn’t fare much better.

The sideplot in this show involved the mommies and how their kids are getting older and don’t want them around because they are being embarrassed. Definitely a funny episode worth watching.

John Cusack, May 2006
Image via Wikipedia

Hot Tub Time Machine was as funny as I thought it would be. I’ve always been a fan of time travel movies like TimeCop and the Back to the Future trilogy.

Of course, sometimes time travel movies are much more well done than others.

This one was fairly low-tech and didn’t use a lot of CGI or computer graphics to speak of. But the story and the humor was extremely well done.

The basic story is there are these three 40 something guys who are all fairly unhappy, bored, and unsatisfied with their mundane lives. None of them have any children that they know of. Of course, there’s a twist to that coming toward the end of the movie.

One of the main characters called Violator even inadvertently by oversight sucks up too much carbon monoxide or actually attempts to kill himself. He was jamming in his garage with the car turned on. He seemed to be happy and into the jam but maybe that’s because he was ready to die.

This is never fully revealed in the movie exactly what his motives were.

But his two friends who he’s been calling a lot come to the hospital to see him. They’ve grown apart because of a number of reasons most of which being that Violator is something of an ass. He’s an alcoholic and they don’t want to be dragged down to his level.

This is where Hot Tub Time Machine starts to get interesting. It’s revealed that John Cusack’s character has a nephew who has been living with him. In an attempt to cheer up their friend Violator they go back to this ski resort that was so hot back in 1986 which is one of their greatest memories the 3 of them have together.

And Cusak brings his nephew along for the ride. This definitely upsets Violator.

They go into the resort which has radically changed and is nothing like they remember. It’s basically a ghost town.

They were sulking and whining about how bad their lives have turned out and how they were nowhere near what they thought they would be when they were there the last time. John Cusack waxes philosophic about the super cool and super hot girlfriend he had which he let get away.

Before they go home they decide to jump in the hot tub before cutting their trip a few days short by going home the next morning. And this is when things get interesting.

The Violator has brought along a Chernobly energy drink and it spills on the hot tub causing them to go back in time to 1986. Only all four of them are transported back in time.

The nephew wasn’t even born yet so he is the time paradox in this story.

The other twist is that these guys all look the same to each other but when they look in the mirror and to other people they look young like they were in 1986.

Chevy Chase makes a cameo appearance telling them exactly what they have to do and that they have to do everything exactly the same. Nothing can change. Otherwise the space-time continuum will be radically altered and Cusack’s nephew starts to fade and disappear.

Many things are revealed including who Cusack’s nephew’s father actually is. It’s quite funny and actually a little bit predictable. The movie takes another crazy twist when the Chevy Chase character tells them exactly how to get home. Once they do, this has the typical Hollywood happy ending.

I won’t give away the ending but you got to check out how the story unfolds, the twist toward the end, and how it all plays out when it’s said and done.
