This is the slide where true conflict is introduced. The Sliders finally have a common enemy. Up until this point in the show’s history they’ve simply been explorers and tourists going from world to world having new adventures and learning about new cultures and ways the earth could have developed.

But they land on this world that seems very barren and there are no people around. No big deal because they have seen this before and in this case it looks like an abandoned city because San Francisco looks to be pretty modern with modern buildings.

So they start to explore and it gets more eerie as everything is just abandoned. You start to think that some sort of plague or epidemic virus has wiped out the humans on this world.

But for the Sliders it’s far worse than that.

This crazy electromagnetic energy is screwing with the timer’s ability to find the wormhole and lock in on the time to the next  gateway. They can’t get a lock on the next window so Quinn says they must start moving towards the disturbance. It’s an electromagnetic field the same as the one the timer operates on.

So he suspects that these people might also have sliding technology.

They come to find out these are not people at all. There are some people still left on this world and they are being invaded by an army of part ape part human beings. And these beings are quite more advanced than the humans are because they can control sliding and they know about the coordinates of different earths.

The Sliders see a ship coming at them which is a flying alien looking ship and since it has the same energy Quinn points the timer at it and opens the window. It isn’t a true vortex that they could slide through but it does bring down the ship and kills the pilot.

Quinn and Prof. Arturo being the scientists they are simply can’t resist the opportunity to explore the ship and learn more about who’s in there. Rembrandt and Wade say that they should just leave it and move on but the scientists did not heed their warnings.

Quinn and the Prof. learn a little bit about them and then see that the pilot is dead. They see something on his wrist and Prof. Arturo removes it which causes this nasty squealing sound to start. They can tell it’s an alarm.

So they start running away and these two Kromag soldiers start chasing after them. They find a dark spot and the open the window and go through as they are being shot at by the laser beams of the Kromags.

They slide into a world called new France where apparently France has colonized or conquered America. The professor is forced to suffer taunts and insults at the hands of the French waiter.

Even though they didn’t see, the professor had taken this wristband alarm and put it in his pocket. He shows it to them and says, “This is the only evidence we have of this alien lifeforms existince.”

But then a red vortex opens and the Kromags come through and hit them with a red beam that knocks them out. They’re taken captive and head to this outpost prison which is uninhabited and the Kromags only used for housing prisoners.

They are subjected to mind control, hypnosis and suggestion. They start hallucinating and don’t know what’s real and what’s not. These tactics glean some good information from the Sliders but has the Kromags worried.

The Kromags end up creating this clever ruse to make the Sliders think they have escaped. They have placed a homing beacon on one of them track their random sliding. They have been convinced through their multiple probings that the Sliders are doing random sliding. They just want to monitor them in the hopes that they will find their home world and then the Kromags will pounce.

Since they’ve never encountered Homo sapiens who could slide they view them as a threat to their government.

It’s a very clever plan and we will see how it all plays out.

This episode begins with a startling discovery. They land in this mansion and Prof. Arturo actually lands on a nice comfy lawn chair. “Finally, for once a soft landing.” He says.

But soon they discover a body floating in a pool as they’re about to leave the private property. Quinn jumps right in and once he hauls out the body he realizes that it is his double in this world. They check his pulse but no CPR is necessary because he has been dead for quite some time.

Then the Wade from this world enters the room with a shocked look on her face as one Quinn is standing before her and another is lying as a corpse next to the pool. She welcomes them into her house and they see pictures of Quinn and Wade because on this world they were married and had a great romance. She welcomes them into her home. But as we know from seeing the show there is probably more to the story and we find out that all is not well in marital paradise.

We soon discover that Quinn has been cheating on her with a younger hotter woman. And Wade is much more than she seems. We are led to believe that she had a hand in her husband’s murder as well as various other unsavory maneuvers to get ahead in this cutthroat business world. She even killed her husband’s partner because he was getting too far along and wanting too much of the credit.

This is a world gone mad and anyone over 30 is considered old. At least that’s how it is in California where the mandatory retirement age is 30. You’re basically put out to pasture on your 30th birthday. In Florida the mandatory retirement age is 40.

This means that the lawyers, the judges, the police and everyone else are all between the ages of teens up to 30. This also creates enormous pressure because if you do not succeed by the age of 30 your window has closed and you will not succeed.

So this creates a very Darwinian society where survival of the fittest rules. And it also leads people to make irrational decisions and do whatever it takes to get ahead. Even when it means doing very immoral things including killing people who are in your way.

The Prof. and Rembrandt are treated like second-class citizens when they go into a bar where it says they can refuse service to people of old age. The bartender gets mad at them and comes out with a billy club attacking Rembrandt and Prof. Arturo who end up getting in a bar fight and beating down the two young ones.

But this lands them in front of a judge and the court system with a public defender who pleads them out. They get 30 days in jail even though the slide is only a couple of days away.

Meanwhile, Wade is being held basically under house arrest.

Quinn is attempting to play along and play the role of this world’s Quinn because Wade’s company has a big learning software that they want passed through that will replace the public education system. So he is having to schmooze the politicians and the powers that be.

At first Quinn was doing this cooperatively but then he sees the more sinister subplot seething beneath the surface. He says he won’t help them anymore and that’s when her second in command takes the timer and uses it as leverage saying he’ll only give it back if Quinn follows the plan. It’s pretty crazy what they have going on in this world.

Quinn and Wade end up making a videotape where she confesses to the murders and her crimes. They hold it over Wade’s head as leverage to get the timer back and it ends up working.

Unlike most episodes they slide out of here without making this world a better place. It is left unknown whether the education software passes and whether this world falls into a nasty oblivion.
